The Trader skill is a free, MIT-licensed pack of 11 Claude skills by Jake Schincariol. It reads public US market data like SEC filings, congressional trade disclosures and news feeds, and organises it for you. This guide shows how to install it and use it as a research assistant. It can't predict the market, and it won't make you money on autopilot.
Not financial advice. This post is for learning only. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell any security. The tool's own README says it "does not know your situation" and "cannot see the future".
What you need
Claude: Claude Code works best, because the skills come with small Python tools. In a normal Claude chat you can paste one
SKILL.mdand use it as a mode, but you lose the tools. The repo: github.com/Jakeschincariol/trader-skill (free, MIT).
Python 3.8 or newer. Nothing to pip install.
A name and email for SEC EDGAR's required user-agent line.
Optional: a broker connector. The pack is built for Alpaca's MCP server and uses its paper (practice) account by default. For research you don't need a broker at all.
The 11 skills, in plain words
/trader-copycat: reads a fund's 13F filing and shows what it held and what changed since last quarter./trader-news: checks headlines and 8-K filings for stocks on your list./trader-pelosi: reads US House members' stock-trade disclosures when they post./trader-analyst: pulls reported revenue, net income, EPS, margins and growth from SEC data./trader-screener: filters companies against rules you write./trader-budget,/trader-risk,/trader-rebalance: arithmetic for sizing, limits and drift./trader-alerts: price-level and market-hours alerts using the NYSE calendar./trader-tax: US cost-basis and wash-sale arithmetic (not tax advice)./trader-broker: turns an approved order into a ticket. It never places an order itself.
Step by step
Install the pack. In Claude, paste this:
https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/trader-skill
install skillOr in Claude Code, run:
/plugin marketplace add Jakeschincariol/trader-skill
/plugin install trader-skill@trader-skillSet your SEC user agent. Put your name and email in
trader/config.jsonas"sec_user_agent": "Your Name you@example.com", or set theSEC_USER_AGENTenvironment variable. SEC asks every script to identify itself.Study a fund's holdings. Paste:
/trader-copycat Show Berkshire Hathaway's latest 13F holdings and what changed since the previous quarter. Tell me the filing date and how old this data is. Do not suggest any trades.Read a company's numbers. Paste:
/trader-analyst Pull the last 8 quarters of revenue, net income, diluted EPS and margins for AAPL from SEC data. Explain the trend in simple English for a beginner. No buy or sell opinion.Catch up on news and filings. Paste:
/trader-news Check headlines and 8-K filings from the last 24 hours for AAPL and MSFT. For each item give one line on what happened and the link. Do not tell me what to do.Look at past ranges, not predictions. The pack has no "time machine" skill. If you want a sense of how much a stock has moved in the past, ask for history, clearly labelled as history:
Using daily closing prices for AAPL over the last 2 years, calculate every rolling 20-trading-day return. Show the minimum, 5th percentile, median, 95th percentile and maximum in a table. Add a note that past ranges do not predict future returns. Do not give a trade idea.If you test the order flow, stay on paper. Keep
"paper": true. Set your brokerage tool in Claude to "Needs approval", never "Always allow".
Good to know
There is no "time machine" and no chart-scanning skill in the current repo. The skills read filings, news and disclosures. Nothing here "finds winning trades".
It's US-only. The data comes from SEC EDGAR, the US House Clerk and the NYSE calendar. It doesn't cover NSE or BSE stocks.
The data is delayed. Funds file 13Fs 45 days after the quarter ends. Congress members have up to 45 days to report trades.
Most active traders lose money. SEBI's study of FY25 found over 91% of individual F&O traders made losses, with net losses of about Rs 1.06 lakh crore. A research tool doesn't change those odds.
Be careful whose advice you follow. SEBI has stopped regulated entities from tying up with unregistered finfluencers. For personal advice, use a SEBI-registered investment adviser.
Automation rules in India. SEBI's retail algo-trading framework became mandatory for brokers from April 1, 2026, with exchange-assigned Algo-IDs on algorithmic orders. If you ever connect a tool like this to an Indian broker's API, check your broker's rules first.
US stocks from India go through the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme, which has a limit of US$250,000 per financial year. TCS of 20% applies to investment remittances above Rs 10 lakh a year.
The free Yahoo Finance chart endpoint the pack uses is unofficial and can change. Check anything important against your broker.
