ChatGPT's Memory feature lets it carry details from one chat into the next. That is handy, but most people never check what it has kept. This post gives you two prompts to see what it knows, the exact settings to delete it, and a short privacy checklist.
What you need
A ChatGPT account (Free, Go, Plus or Pro). Web or the iOS/Android app both work. chatgpt.com
Five minutes.
Note: menu names can vary by plan, region, platform and workspace, according to OpenAI's own help page. If you don't see a setting below, it may not be enabled for your account.
Step by step
1. Ask ChatGPT to list what it remembers. Open a new chat and paste this:
List every saved memory and every detail you can reference about me from past chats. Give it as one complete numbered list. Do not summarise or merge items. For each item, say whether it is a saved memory or something from chat history.OpenAI says you can ask ChatGPT directly what it remembers, but the answer may not be exhaustive. So treat this as a starting point, and use the settings in step 3 for the real list.
2. Ask what it has guessed about you. In the same chat, paste:
Now list anything you could infer about me that I never stated directly, such as my job, location, routine or interests. For each one, tell me which past message or memory made you think so, and how confident you are. Clearly mark guesses as guesses.Be clear about what this shows. ChatGPT is making these guesses on the spot from what you have shared. The reel's claim that it secretly keeps a file with your income and predictions about your future is not something OpenAI's documentation describes, and we could not verify it. What it does keep is described below.
3. Open your memory settings. On web: click your profile (bottom left) > Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage or Saved memories.
4. Delete what you don't want. In the saved memories list, remove items one by one. You can also tell ChatGPT "forget that I..." in a chat. If you see a Memory summary, the ••• menu has Delete and turn off memory. That deletes what the summary shows and switches Memory off. "Don't mention this again" only reduces future mentions. It does not delete anything.
5. Decide on chat history. Turn off Reference chat history if you don't want past chats used. OpenAI says information from past chats is then scheduled for deletion within 30 days. Your old chats stay in your sidebar until you delete them.
6. Or turn Memory off completely. Same page, switch off Memory. If you turn it back on later, ChatGPT can build new memories from chats still in your history.
7. Stop your chats being used for training. On web: profile > Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone > turn off > Done. On the app: sidebar > profile icon > Settings > Data controls.
The full privacy checklist
Review saved memories once a month and delete anything sensitive.
Turn off Reference chat history if you share personal details in chats.
Turn off Improve the model for everyone in Data controls.
Use Temporary Chat for anything sensitive. OpenAI says temporary chats do not create or update memories.
Delete old chats you don't need. Deleting a memory does not delete the chat it came from, and deleting a chat does not delete the memory. Do both.
Avoid thumbs-up or thumbs-down on sensitive chats. As Notebookcheck reports, OpenAI says a conversation you give feedback on may be used for training even with the setting off.
Download your data once to see what is stored: Settings, or privacy.openai.com.
Never paste Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, passwords or medical reports into a normal chat.
Good to know
Turning off training only affects new chats. Data already used is not removed.
Turning off Memory does not delete past chats. You have to delete those separately.
Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces work differently. OpenAI says it does not train on them by default, and your admin controls exports.
OpenAI says limited safety-related context may still be used in rare, high-risk situations, even with Memory off.
Settings names change often. If something has moved, search the Settings page or check OpenAI's help center.
