ChatGPT can take a photo of your bedroom or living room and show you a redesigned version: new layout, colours, lighting and decor. With the right follow-up prompt, it can also turn that design into a shopping list within your budget. Here are the full prompts, plus an honest note about product links.
What you need
A ChatGPT account that can upload images and create images. chatgpt.com
One or two clear photos of your room, taken in daylight from a corner so most of the room is visible.
Rough room size (for example 12 x 10 ft) and your budget in rupees.
Step by step
1. Upload your room photo in a new chat.
2. Paste the redesign prompt:
Here's a photo of my room. Redesign it like a professional interior designer would.
Keep the room's walls, windows, doors and the main furniture I already own (bed/sofa) in the same positions. Show how it could look much better with a different layout of the smaller pieces, new colours, lighting and decor.
Style: warm, modern and realistic, suitable for an Indian home. Room size is about [12 x 10 ft].
Generate one photorealistic image of the redesigned room from the same camera angle as my photo. Then list every change you made, grouped as: layout, paint/colours, lighting, furniture added, decor added.3. Ask for variations if you want them.
Now give me 2 more versions of the same room: one minimal Japandi style and one with warm Indian textiles and wood. Same camera angle, same fixed furniture.4. Get the budget shopping list. In the same chat:
Turn the design I liked best into a shopping list with a total budget of ₹[25,000].
Make a table with: item, why it's in the design, size or dimensions to look for, material and colour, a realistic price range in India, and the exact search phrase I should type on a shopping site to find it.
Put items in priority order, so if I stop halfway the room still looks better. Keep the total under budget and show the running total. Mark anything I could do myself for less (paint, rearranging, DIY decor).5. Find the actual products. Copy each search phrase into the shopping site you use and pick a product that matches the size and price. Or use ChatGPT's shopping research: open the + menu, choose shopping research, and describe one item at a time. OpenAI launched it in November 2025 for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users.
6. Check before you buy. Before you order, check the item's dimensions against your room, the return policy and the delivery date.
Why we don't ask for "exact Amazon links"
The original prompt asks ChatGPT for exact Amazon links. That doesn't work reliably:
Amazon blocked OpenAI's crawlers in late 2025 through its robots.txt, so ChatGPT's shopping research can't see live Amazon listings, prices or reviews (Business Today). A June 2026 report said the block was still in place (Let's Data Science).
Links a chatbot writes from memory can be dead, wrong or for a different product.
Even with shopping research, OpenAI says it "might make mistakes" on price and availability, and advises checking the seller's site.
Search phrases plus price ranges give you a list you can trust, and you can shop it on any site.
Good to know
The image is a mood board, not a plan. AI images can change room proportions, move windows or show furniture that wouldn't fit. Measure before buying.
Prices change. The ranges ChatGPT gives are estimates. Treat them as a guide.
Privacy. Room photos can show addresses, documents, family photos or the view outside. Crop or clear these out first, and consider a Temporary Chat.
Image limits. How many images you can create depends on your ChatGPT plan.
Sponsored results. Shopping results in ChatGPT may include paid placements. Amazon has bought ChatGPT ads, for example. Check what is an ad before you click.
