If PF is deducted from your salary every month, you have a UAN (Universal Account Number), even if nobody told you what it is. Your UAN links every PF account you've had across jobs. Once you know it and activate it, you can see your balance, your employer's contribution and the interest credited. Here is how.
What you need
The mobile number linked to your PF account
Your name and date of birth exactly as in your PF records, plus your Aadhaar or PAN
A smartphone with the UMANG app, if your UAN isn't activated yet
Step by step
Part 1: Find your UAN
Check your latest salary slip first. Many employers print the UAN next to your PF number or Member ID.
If it isn't there, open the EPFO Unified Member Portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) and choose Know Your UAN.
Enter the mobile number linked to your PF account, fill in the captcha and click Request OTP.
Enter the OTP to verify your number.
Enter your name, date of birth, and your Aadhaar or PAN details, then click Show My UAN. Your UAN appears on screen.
If that doesn't work, ask your HR or payroll team. They can see the UAN linked to your employment record.
Part 2: Activate your UAN (one time)
You need an activated UAN to log in and see your passbook. Since August 2025, EPFO allows new UAN activation only through the UMANG app with Aadhaar face authentication.
Install the UMANG app and the Aadhaar Face RD app on your phone.
In UMANG, open EPFO Services, then UAN Activation under UAN Services Through Face Auth.
Complete the face scan and follow the prompts to set up your login.
If you don't have a UAN at all, the option UAN Allotment and Activation in the same section creates one.
Part 3: Check your PF balance
Go to the EPFO website (epfindia.gov.in) and open Member Passbook (e-Passbook).
Log in with your UAN, password and captcha.
Select the Member ID for the job you want to see.
Your passbook shows your contribution, your employer's contribution, the pension share and the interest credited. You can download it as a PDF.
Other ways to check
SMS: from your registered mobile, send "EPFOHO UAN ENG" to 7738299899. This works only for activated UANs. Some sites drop the "ENG", so check the current format on EPFO's site.
UMANG app: the EPFO section also lets you view your passbook after activation.
Helpdesk: EPFO's helpline is 14470.
Good to know
Portal changes. EPFO upgraded the member portal in July 2026, and menus have moved. If a button isn't where this guide says, look for the same name on the new home page.
Passbook timing. The passbook appears a few hours after activation and updates in cycles. It shows the month and year of each contribution, not the exact date.
Who can't see it. Members of exempted establishments (companies that run their own PF trust), and settled or inoperative accounts, can't use the EPFO passbook.
Safety. EPFO never asks for your password or OTP on calls. Only use epfindia.gov.in and the official UMANG app, and avoid look-alike "EPFO login" sites.
Changing jobs? Make sure your old employer updates your date of exit, so your PF moves with you to the same UAN.
