On 21 October 2026, Anthropic announced Claude Duet, an agent that messages you first instead of waiting for a prompt. This post sums up what is confirmed from Anthropic's own pages, what is still limited, and what you can try in India while Duet stays US-only.
What happened
Anthropic released Claude Duet as a research preview. Anthropic describes it as a personal AI agent you message. It handles your inbox, calendar and follow-ups, and it messages you when something needs your decision.
The confirmed facts:
Who can get it: Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, through a waitlist. Invites go out in waves. Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet.
Where it runs: standalone iOS and Android apps, plus claude.ai on a computer. It lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app.
Model: Claude Opus 5.5. You can't pick a different model.
It messages first: each morning it reviews your email and calendar and sends a short brief on what needs attention. It can start first steps, like drafting replies for you to review.
Regular check-ins: it checks your connected apps "every few hours" and only pings you when something needs you. Anthropic says you can tell it what you want to hear about and how often. Anthropic does not publish a fixed timetable.
Its own computer: it works on a cloud virtual machine with its own browser, so your phone or laptop does not need to be on.
One thread: you talk to it by text or voice in one ongoing thread. Your Claude memory, skills and connected apps carry over.
Connectors: access to more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. Named examples include Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, HubSpot, DocuSign and Shopify.
Payments: it can buy things through Stripe's Link or Shopify's Shop Pay, with your approval, using a one-time virtual card for each purchase.
You stay in control: before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it will do and waits for your yes. Even with approval, it cannot trade securities or move money between accounts.
Cost: included in Pro and Max at no extra charge during the preview. Its background checks and the morning brief count toward your normal five-hour and weekly usage limits.
Anthropic is also open about the limits. Duet may misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent. Something urgent can arrive between check-ins. Personal errands like booking tickets are weaker than work tasks. You can't yet watch or take over its cloud browser. It doesn't make phone calls or send texts. Microsoft 365 isn't supported yet, and Slack works with limits.
Why it matters for you
You can't use it in India yet. Duet is US-only during the preview, and you need a Pro or Max plan plus a waitlist invite. If you are in India, there is no official way in right now.
The shift is real, though. Most AI tools wait for you to open them. Duet is built to watch your work apps and come to you. Anthropic is not alone here: news coverage names Meta's Muse, OpenAI's Dots, Google's Gemini Spark and Microsoft's Autopilot as similar agents.
Watch your limits. Because background checks use your plan's limits, a proactive agent costs usage even on days you never open it. If you hit Claude limits often, keep that in mind before you join any waitlist.
You can try the idea today. If you have connected Gmail and Google Calendar in the regular Claude app, you can ask for a manual morning brief. It won't run by itself, but it shows you the kind of help Duet aims to give:
Look at my Gmail from the last 24 hours and my Google Calendar for today.
Give me a short morning brief:
1. Today's meetings, with one line on what I should prepare for each.
2. Up to 5 emails that need a reply from me, ranked by urgency, with why.
3. Any deadline or payment mentioned in my emails this week.
Do not send, delete or archive anything. Draft replies only if I ask.Review every draft before you send it. The same rule Anthropic built into Duet applies to you: AI prepares, you decide.
What to watch next
Wider rollout. Anthropic calls Duet a research preview and starts with US Pro and Max users. No date has been given for other countries or plans.
Merging with the main app. For now Duet stays separate from the Claude app during the preview. Whether it moves into the main app later has not been announced.
Coming features. Anthropic lists sign-in with logins saved in 1Password (with your permission) and Shopify visual storefront editing as coming soon.
Safety record. Anthropic says red teams and an outside firm tested Duet, and it is covered by a public bug bounty. Real-world use will show how well its approval steps hold up.
